United Way of Jackson County is joining with many other groups and organizations around the community, region and country in the 21-Day Equity Challenge. And you can be part of it all!

Take the pre-survey and challenge yourself to read, listen, watch and reflect for the next 21 working days. We are beginning on January 4 and ending February 2. Text is from United Way!

Dee-Anne Everson at DeeAnne@unitedwayofjacksoncounty.org to sign up!

“The challenge was created by Dr. Eddie Moore and Debby Irving into the 21-day Racial Equity challenge launched in 2014. As their website offers: “Have you ever made a successful change in your life? Perhaps you wanted to exercise more, eat less, or change jobs? Think about the time and attention you dedicated to the process. A lot, right?

Change is hard. Creating effective social justice habits, particularly those dealing with issues of power, privilege, supremacy and leadership is like any lifestyle change. Setting our intentions and adjusting what we spend our time doing is essential. It’s all about building new habits. Sometimes the hardest part is just getting started. The good news is, there’s an abundance of resources just waiting to empower you to be a more effective player in the quest for equity and justice.

Please use this plan just as it is, or adapt it to a sector, an ethnic/racial group, or interest area.”

We’re all on a learning journey each day as we work to mobilize caring to affect change in our communities. We are in this together. This Challenge is designed to push all of us and we all come with our own lens and different backgrounds and experiences. If a particular day or challenge doesn’t work for you, please hang in there. See what you can learn anyway. Stick with it! Take some time over the next 21 working days to challenge yourself and to share your reflections.

As you move through each day, remember:

1. You have the opportunity to learn. There may be perspectives, thoughts, ideas and beliefs you haven’t engage with before. Your own perspective could be challenged and it can bring up strong feelings — positive and negative. Self-care is important.

2. Your feelings are important. If you’re angry, reflect on it. If you’re sad, take a moment to feel that. If you’re uncomfortable, it’s okay. And if it doesn’t affect you, that’s okay too. Because your feelings are important.

3. Be proud of yourself for stepping into this. Be open to changing an opinion, learning something new, growing.

You’ll be given a topic and 3–4 options each day to learn, read, or view information on that day’s topic. Then take a moment to reflect. Share it with us and with your own network.

Our gratitude goes to all those who have done this before our United Way and to all of you for joining us in the challenge!”
